Your first adventure

The fastest ways to start playing — the Tutorial, Quick Story, Quick RPG — and what happens when you start a scenario yourself.

The Play menu#

Everything starts from Play. On desktop it's the Play button in the top bar; on phones it's the raised Play button in the middle of the bottom bar. New accounts land on the Play page right after sign-up. You'll see five options:

Option What it does
Tutorial Learn the basics in a short guided story.
Quick Story Jumps straight into a freeform, story-first adventure.
Quick RPG Stats, dice and a class, ready to roll.
Create a Scenario Opens the scenario editor so you can build your own world.
Create a Multiplayer Lobby Pick a scenario and invite friends.

Tutorial#

The Tutorial is a short story that walks you through each action type — Do, Say, Story, Guide and See — as you play. If you've already started it, choosing Tutorial again picks up where you left off rather than starting over.

The Tutorial doesn't count against your plan's usage limits, and images you make in it aren't charged. When you finish, a banner offers to Discover more stories, Show me around (a quick guided tour of the adventure screen) or Keep practicing.

Quick Story and Quick RPG#

These pick a well-liked published scenario for you and start it immediately — no setup questions. Quick Story picks a Story (freeform) scenario; Quick RPG picks an RPG scenario, gives you a random class if the scenario has classes, and rolls your stats for you. Both prefer scenarios you haven't played yet, and both only choose scenarios rated Safe or Moderate.

If there's nothing suitable to pick, you'll get a link to browse Discover instead.

Starting a specific scenario#

Found something you like on Home or Discover? Open it to see its scenario page, then press Play.

Some scenarios ask you a few questions first. If so, a short setup wizard appears (Step 1 of N), and you move through it with Next → and ← Back, finishing with ▶ Start. Depending on the scenario, it can include:

  • Character Name — what your character is called. The story will use it.
  • Choose your class — for RPG scenarios that offer classes.
  • Assign your stats — spend points across your stats with the − and + buttons, or press Roll for me. You get 3 points per stat to spend, and no single stat can go more than +5 above its starting value.
  • Questions from the author — scenarios can include blanks for you to fill in, such as your character's hometown or what they're searching for. Every question needs an answer.
  • World info — background notes from the author to read before you begin.

If a scenario doesn't need any of this, the adventure starts straight away.

Other buttons on the scenario page:

  • Play with Friends starts a group lobby — see Playing with friends.
  • Edit then Play makes your own private copy of the scenario so you can tweak it before playing.

Your first few turns#

Once the story opens, press Your move, type what you want to do and press Enter. Or press Continue to let the narrator carry on by itself. The command bar: taking turns explains every button.

Your adventure saves automatically after every turn. To come back later, open Saves and press Continue on its card — or look in the My Saves row on Home.
