Editing, undo and branching timelines

Click any passage to rewrite it, undo or rewind to any point, and hop between alternate timelines — nothing is ever deleted.

Your story is never set in stone. You can rewrite any passage, rewind to any moment and try something different — and RPGCortex keeps every path you've taken, so you can always go back.

Editing a passage#

Click any part of the story — the narrator's text or your own ➤ line — and it turns into an editable box right where you clicked.

  • Click away to save.
  • Press Esc to cancel.
  • Ctrl+Enter (or Cmd+Enter on a Mac) also saves.

You can also use the small tools under each passage (they appear when you hover on desktop, and are always visible on touch screens):

  • Edit — edit the narrator's text.
  • Edit input — edit your own line for that turn.
  • Rewind to here — see below.
  • Inspect — on turns where it's available, shows what was sent to the AI for that turn, broken down by category (instructions, State Cards, recent history and so on).
  • Report — tell the team about a problem with that passage. See Reporting and blocking.

Edits change the words, not the game state#

Editing a passage changes its text only. If the narrator said you found 50 gold and you edit it to 500, your inventory doesn't change by itself. Edited turns show a state not synced badge with a Sync now button — press it to have the game state re-read from your edited text. You can also fix stats and items directly in the Stats panel.

Editing also refreshes the story's memory of that point — see Memory, context and the story summary.

Undo#

The Undo last turn button in the header steps the story back by one turn. You'll be asked to confirm: "Rewind to the previous turn? What comes after stays as a branch you can come back to."

Rewind to here#

To go back further, use Rewind to here under any passage. The story jumps back to that point, and whatever came after is kept as a branch.

Branching timelines#

Every time you undo, rewind or retry and then carry on, RPGCortex remembers both paths. That's a branch.

When a passage has alternatives, you'll see a branch button beside it — for example 1 other branch or 3 other branches. Click it to see each alternative with its date and the start of its text, and pick one to jump to it.

  • Nothing is deleted. Undo, Rewind and Retry all keep the old path.
  • Picking a branch takes you to that alternative passage. If that branch went on for more turns, you'll find them as branches from there.
  • The story's automatic summary and memory always follow the branch you're on, so the AI doesn't get confused by paths you abandoned.

In multiplayer#

Editing, Undo, Rewind, Sync and switching branches are host-only. Other players can still Report a passage.
