Stats, inventory and progression
The Stats panel tracks your stats, items and the characters you've met — plus class levels, XP, quests, reputation and random tables in RPG scenarios.
Underneath the prose, RPGCortex keeps a running record of your character. The narrator updates it as the story unfolds, and you can adjust it yourself at any time. Open it with the Stats button under the command bar.
The Stats panel#
The panel has up to five parts:
- Your class — if the scenario has classes, your class name with Level and XP.
- Party — in multiplayer, a read-only view of the other players' stats and inventory.
- Stats — numbers (like health or gold), text (like a title) or yes/no values (like "Poisoned").
- Inventory — items and how many of each you have.
- Characters — people you've met, each with a short description and a View State Card button.
Changing things yourself#
- Press + next to a section to add a stat, an item or a character.
- Stats can be a Number, Text or Yes/No.
- Adding an item with the same name as one you already have increases its quantity instead.
- Click a stat's value to edit it, then press ✓ to save or ✕ to cancel.
- Number stats with a maximum show as
value / maxwith a bar.
How the narrator updates it#
As it writes, the AI can change stats, add and remove items, and add, update or remove characters. It can only change stats that already exist (or add new custom ones), and number values stay within any minimum and maximum the scenario set.
Sometimes the story implies a change that didn't get recorded — say, the text mentions you picked up a key, but it isn't in your inventory. RPGCortex checks for this after each turn, and you may see a banner above the command bar saying The story suggests changes the game didn't record: with the suggested changes listed. Press Apply change(s) to apply them or Ignore to skip.
Limit on custom stats and items#
Each adventure can hold up to 40 custom stats and different items combined. Stats that came with the scenario don't count, and adding more of an item you already have doesn't count either. If the limit is reached, you'll see a message saying what couldn't be added.
Story vs RPG scenarios#
In Story (freeform) scenarios the AI doesn't set stats, create new stats, grant XP or change reputation — the focus is purely on the narrative. It still tracks items, characters and quests. In RPG scenarios all of the tools below are available when the scenario uses them.
Classes, levels and XP#
Some RPG scenarios let you choose a class when you start (see Your first adventure). A class is a State Card that's sent to the AI every turn.
- The narrator can award XP for your achievements, and completing quests can award XP too.
- Your level comes from the class's level table, written by the scenario's author. Not every class has one — without a level table, a class doesn't level up.
- When you level up, you'll see 🎉 Level N! Choose a stat to improve:. Pick a number stat and press Apply +1. If you gained several levels at once, you'll pick one at a time.
Quests#
Quest cards describe goals, often with a list of objectives. The quest's card shows a live checklist (☑ / ☐), with optional objectives marked (optional).
- The narrator ticks off objectives as you achieve them.
- When every required objective is done, the quest is marked completed and pays out any rewards the author set — items to your inventory and XP to everyone in the party.
- A quest can also end up failed or abandoned, depending on how the story goes.
Active quests are sent to the AI every turn, so the narrator keeps your goals in mind.
Factions and reputation#
Faction cards track how a group feels about you. Your standing starts at 0 and the narrator adjusts it as you help or cross them. The faction's card shows Reputation: N along with your current tier name (for example "Trusted" or "Hostile" — the tiers are set by the scenario's author).
Random tables#
Table cards hold lists of possible outcomes — random encounters, loot, weather. The narrator can roll on a table when the story calls for it; the result appears in your story as 🎲 Table name: result, and the AI takes it from there.
