The command bar: taking turns
How to act in the story — Your move, the five action types, Continue, Retry and Guided retry.
The command bar sits at the bottom of every adventure. From left to right it has Your move, Continue and Retry, with a row of smaller buttons underneath for State Cards and Stats.
Your move#
Press Your move to open the composer. Along its top are five action types — pick one, type, and press Enter to send.
| Action | Use it for | What the AI receives |
|---|---|---|
| Do | Something your character does. | Your words, switched to second person — "I draw my sword" becomes "You draw your sword". |
| Say | Something your character says out loud. | You say, "…" — you don't need to type the quotation marks. |
| Story | Writing the next bit of the story yourself. | Exactly what you typed. |
| Guide | Out-of-character directions to the AI, like "introduce a rival" or "slow the pacing down". | Your note, clearly marked as an out-of-character instruction rather than something that happens in the story. |
| See | Getting a picture of the scene. | "You take a closer look…", plus an image is generated. See Scene images. |
Do is selected by default. In your story, your turns appear with a ➤ in front; Guide turns show as "(OOC)" so it's clear they weren't part of the tale.
A few more composer details:
- Enter sends; Shift+Enter starts a new line.
- Esc (or the ✕) closes the composer. Your draft and chosen action type are kept for next time.
- See is the only action you can send empty — a blank See pictures your current surroundings.
- Turns can be up to 10,000 characters.
In scenarios written in the third person, the prompts change to match — "What do they do?" instead of "What do you do?" — and Say uses your character's name.
Continue#
Continue asks the narrator to carry on without any input from you. It's great when you're enjoying where a scene is going and just want more of it. If you had a half-written draft in the composer, it stays there — Continue never sends it.
Retry and Guided retry#
Didn't like the last response? Retry asks the AI to write a fresh version of the latest response.
The small pencil (✎) on the right-hand side of the Retry button is Guided retry. It lets you say what should change before regenerating — for example "make it shorter" or "have the guard notice the dagger". Type your instruction and press Regenerate. The instruction only applies to that one regeneration.
You can only retry the newest response on your current path, and not the opening passage. In multiplayer, only the host can retry.
The header#
The icons along the top of an adventure are:
- Undo last turn — steps back one turn (the old turn stays as a branch).
- Switch model — choose which AI model writes your story. See AI models.
- Chat — private messages with friends, and group chat in multiplayer.
- Settings — the gear icon, with gameplay, model, narration, display and scenario settings.
Tap the cover image on the left for the Now playing menu: your credit balance, Get More Credits / Subscribe, Support, Feedback and Exit Adventure.
On phones#
On narrow screens the command bar stretches to fill the width. If narration is turned on, its button moves down to the smaller row as Narrate. On very small screens, Continue and Retry show as icons only.
If you hit a limit#
Each plan has a rolling limit on how many actions you can take and how much AI work you can use. If you reach it, the adventure tells you when it frees up. See Usage limits.
